Ciclismo en Ruta
It is important to be surrounded by good professionals

.

Carlos Sastre  / March '08

Carlos y Chema
After one year of working together, I would like to talk about the person who has organised, and continues to organise the most complicated moments in the life of a sportsman; of the professional who has managed to make my life in the spotlight better and easier to cope with.

Maintaining a private life alongside your professional career is pretty complicated at the beginning of the season. It is at that point that the Press Officer carries out his most important role. Both the amount of time you spend away from home and the numerous activities and commitments mean that it is not an easy time. For this reason, I find it essential to have someone like Chema Rodríguez nearby and I’ve realised this since knowing him.

In this column I would like to say just how important it is to work with professional people. At some moments in life you think you can achieve anything and then all of a sudden you realise that it’s all too much; you realise that you are not achieving what you thought you could. Everybody has a role in life and it’s important to give it your all to feel satisfied. Investing time in superfluous obligations only creates stress and anxiety. So you need time to work hard but also to have a good time.

When you’re focused on your work, sitting down in front of your computer and waiting for ideas to come is not an easy business. You start getting your head around the goal and as the date approaches, the pressure increases. It is a difficult feeling to explain. It’s like when you go to school and you only have homework. You do it and that’s it. But when it’s nearly exam time, it’s different. You have a goal and you want to do well. You concentrate and dedicate as much time as possible to it; in other words, you have very little time for anything else.

Everything in this life is a sacrifice if you want to achieve your goals. We go up a level, we stumble, we pick ourselves back up, we fall again... Until we get over that obstacle, we’re stuck in this constant fight. In most cases, we think about giving up, but in the end we carry on because we like it. And this applies to all aspects of life: we all want to reach our targets and it is only our mind that limits them.

Thanks to the work that Chema carries out, I’ve got time to sit down and write this column in peace and above all, to spend more time with my family. There have been times in my life when I haven’t had the motivation to do anything, because everything seemed too much for me. But I have finally found somebody who makes my life that bit easier. Now I can fully concentrate on my work without worrying about all those other things that meant I had to be in a thousand places at once without being in any.
