. | Carlos is encouraging you to collaborate with the charity foundations that he has been intensely involved with for quite some time now. The Fundación Deportiva Víctor Sastre sports foundation in El Barraco (Ávila), the Kinderkankerfonds in Gent (Belgium), Velokhaya en South Africa and the Ávila Down’s Syndrome Association provide care work and teaching in different fields, predominantly for children, with the aim of offering the children health and educational benefits through practising sports and medical and psychological care in specialised centres. | | | | The work of the Fundación Provincial Deportiva Víctor Sastre is aimed at children, using sport as a means for personal and physical development. The foundation now has 80 students between the ages of 7 and 23 years of age. Cycling has been the main sport practised since the creation of the foundation, but they have now started working with athletics and the idea is to collaborate and help with other sports. All the children from El Barraco, Ávila city and province and other nearby provinces benefit from the ever-evolving foundation. | | Kinderkankerfonds is a Belgian foundation that focuses all its efforts and support on children suffering from cancer. There is a reason behind supporting this non-Spanish foundation. Carlos Sastre has a fan club in Aalter, a town near Gent, that has now grown to nearly 450 members. It was through this gratifying relationship that the idea was borne to use Carlos’ image to financially help these children. The profits from the sale of t-shirts and charitable initiatives are donated to the hospital located in this Belgian city. | | Velokhaya's video and photos >> | Velokhaya is the awareness and fundraising vehicle for the Life Cycling Academy (LCA), a non-profit organization focused on introducing the sport of cycling to previously disadvantaged communities in South Africa. The LCA was established in 2002 and its programs were initially limited to introducing competitive cycling to young children in some of Cape Town's poorest communities. Velokhaya -which takes its name from the French word for bicycle (velo) and the Xhosa word for home (khaya)- is a joint initiative by Cape Town's Life Cycling Academy (LCA), Team CSC and its sponsors, CSC, Cervélo and Descente. | The Ávila Down’s Syndrome Association collaborates with the Public Authorities, through agreements, in the provision of specialised services for people with Down’s Syndrome. The foundation’s philosophy centres on the dignity of human beings, considering all people with Down’s Syndrome as individuals with feelings, abilities, experiences, ambitions, needs and flaws. The foundation works on the principle that there should be more emphasis on their capabilities rather than their limitations or differences. | | | | The main aim of the VIhDA Association is to contribute to the life expectancy and improve the quality of life in the HIV/AIDS community of countries where economic levels are low and health and social assistance structure is scarce. Its first specific project is being undertaken in Kenya, in the Maragua District. This is an outpatient clinic for AIDS patients in the area near the District's hospital. Spanish doctors and Kenyan health workers will jointly set up programmes on health education, preventing the transmittal of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases, environmental sanitation and sanitary information. | PYDS (Purkal) was founded by a small group of people who are committed to do what is within their power in their own community and their example is encouraging others to get involved in what is happening in the small village around the Purkal Gaon complex. In Purkal, PYDS has made great efforts to change the life of almost 140 children. These volunteers provide education, food and tutelage for children that come from the poorest villages in India. These children, who were hardly even able to understand their lessons when they joined the project, can now express themselves perfectly in English. They have become interactive students who are developing interest and enthusiasm for science, history and geography. | | | The Sid-Can organisation is acknowledged by the Spanish Home Office and was created by a group of people that have lived through an experience of cancer or aids, either directly or through a friend or relative, and have joined the organisation to give thanks for life and to the people who have done so much for them Its members want to engage in doing something for those who are now experiencing difficult moments. |
